We Didnt Hire You Because We Just Dont Like You
We Didnt Hire You Because We Just Dont Like YouWe Didnt Hire You Because We Just Dont Like YouThere is one powerful lesson all job hunters should learn manners, attitude and behavior are all important components of making a good first impression It doesnt matter how qualified you are, if youre a discourteous jerk, youre probably not getting the job. Call it culture fit, call it intuition, or just call it old-fashioned gut instinct, but candidates who cant even deliver good behavior and a genuine personality for a few hours probably dont stand a chance after a few months. You will never see an actual rejection letter that states, We didnt hire you because youre a rude jerk, but you can be certain that many job candidates get tossed aside because they didnt show common courtesy and appropriate respect. As always, were here to help you out Heres seven tips on interview etiquetteBe courteous everywhere to everyone all the time. Weve all heard about the importance of treating everyone wi th respect, right down to the receptionist. I dont know many people who are overtly rude to receptionists during a job interview, but this advice applies to more subtle scenarios as well. Smile to everyone, look like youre happy to be there, and thank every single person who interacts with you. Its not uncommon for hiring managers to ask everyone about their opinion of you.Dont waste their time. Recruiters, HR professionals and hiring managers are all very busy people, so dont be the person who keeps applying for the saatkorn job over and over. And if you dont hear back from them right away on the job, keep your follow-up to a minimum. Pestering a recruiter will quickly diminish your chances of getting an offer. Sometimes searches take longer than anticipated, and no news is exactly that no news.Listen to the question. When youre asked the question, Tell me about yourself, it isnt a historical question, its a question that asks what kind of professional you are. Of course, you shou ld be prepared to talk about all aspects of your professional life in an interview but that doesnt mean you should give this long, all-encompassing narrative when they havent requested one. Most interview questions have a surface and sub-surface purpose. Make aya youre answering both and giving the interviewers what they need to assess your ability to do the job in addition to simply answering the question.Listen to what they say. The kiss of death in any job interview is to ask for information youve already been given, i.e. most hiring managers describe the job at the beginning of the interview. Its okay to ask for clarification but dont ask in such a way that suggests you werent listening when they explained it to you earlier in the conversation. No phones allowed. Nothing conveys a sense of youre not worth paying attention to than fidgeting with or answering your cell phone. Leave your phone at home, in the car or if you do bring it with you, turn it off completely no vibrating a llowed Your interviewer expects and deserves your undivided attention. And as tempting as it might be, dont get caught texting while youre waiting for the next person to enter the room.Dress appropriately. Even though there are many settings where business casual is accepted and even expected, most professionals are expected to wear business attire to an interview. If you have any doubts, make an inquiry from the person who invited you to the interview. If they expect you to show up dressed one way, and you fail to do so, it could be seen as a sign of disrespect. And heres an important piece of advice Dont ask them what you should wear to an interview. Ask them how MOST people dress for the interview. This keeps the advice accurate and reliable.Appreciate and follow up. Thank you notes are still expected by email the same day as the interview, and definitely no later than the following day. If you made a promise to provide references or samples of your work, be prompt in providing t hem. Make sure to follow up and recognize the courtesies that have been extended to you.Keep all these tips in mind and you will have a better chance at landing a job. Happy hunting

Feeling Stuck in Your Career Heres How Yoga Can Help
Feeling Stuck in Yur Career Heres How Yoga Can Help Feeling Stuck in Your Career Heres How Yoga Can Help Aelendher Monday unfolds, replacing the weekends adventures with meetings, memos, and morning commutes. What happened to the power career you imagined - the one where waking up each morning was exciting, the office dress code was fashionista, and every executive decision made the world a better distributions-mix? Somewhere along the way, monotony and complacency flooded in, drowning your motivation.Albert Einsteins famous quote reminds us that nothing happens until something moves. Yoga teaches that we are that something, and that once we start moving, anything is possible. Here are three ways yoga can help unstick your career and get you back into your groove 1. Yoga Boosts ConfidenceGenerating the momentum to move out of a current situation, however unsatisfying, is nearly impossible without confidence. The more disheartening the circumstance, the less confidence we have.A yoga practice provides a nurturing embrace to the discouraged psyche, imparting confidence with every pose. Whether a beginner yogi or advanced practitioner, every foray onto the mat requires you to attempt something new - most likely to fail at your first attempt, persevere, and ultimately succeed. We condition ourselves on the mat to embrace challenges, to grow comfortable with our own discomfort, and to endure until we succeed. The lasting result is a hard-borne confidence that carries over into all areas of life, from the yoga mat to the workplace. With your confidence reignited, formerly daunting career opportunities suddenly take on a new sheen of enticement. Office relationships that were previously draining become less prickly whenyou can stand confidently behind your decisions and work caliber. Confidence shifts perception, providing the necessary fuel to stimulate a new adventure or breath life into a dull workday. With a fresh morning cup of confidence, you can step into the o ffice willing to risk failure, yet believing in your ability to succeed. 2. Stretch Your Body, Stretch Your BoundariesYoga stretches not just the body, but also the self-imposed limitations on our capabilities. When we participate in the physical transformation of the body and successfully manifest previously impossible feats like touching our toes, bending backwards, or even standing on our heads, our definition of what is possible for ourselves expands. We unlock creativity through movement, which a monotonous daily work routinemay stifle.Creativity stimulates growth, both on the yoga mat and in the cubicle. Ifyou want to advance your career, you must be creative enough to conceive and initiate new possibilities. 3. Yoga Energizes From WithinEven backed by an overflow of confidence, the most creative intentions will not manifest without energy. Momentum demands we give it an energetic push to gain velocity. You will only find defeatwhen youseek outwardly for the inspiration to prop elyou forward. Whenever we rely on outside sources for inspiration, thosewellsprings eventually disappear. Vacations end, payday bonuses get spent, and even shiny new offices grow dull.Yoga, however, recharges us from the inside. It is an honest celebration of self, regardless of outside circumstances. When we feel worthy, confident, and excited because of who we are, we become our own sources of inspiration.- Confidence, creativity, and inspiration are all self-expressions yoga draws forth. These qualities are powerful enough to transform our bodies, expand our perspective, and add innovation to our daily work routines. When transformation happens from within, our confidence soars, we are more willing to take calculated risks, and no obstacles are insurmountable. This attitude is exactly what we need to move forward in our careers and in our lives.Lara Alexiou is the author of Become the Architect of Your Body, Mind, and Soul.Visit her online at https//www.steamtownyoga.com/books an d follow her on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.

How to Use Facebook Groups for Networking and Job Search
How to Use facebook inc Groups for Networking and Job SearchHow to Use Facebook Groups for Networking and Job SearchIf you think of Facebook as a place to post photos of your pets and kids, well, youre elend wrong. But the social media siteisalso a powerful tool for networking and engaging in a job search. Think about it How often have you seen a friend post that his or her company is looking to fill a position? And, how many groups exist that are related to your field? Much like the office water cooler or a get-together with friends, Facebook is a virtual gathering place where people talk about kids, pets, the nachrichten- and work, too. Try these simple strategies to use Facebook to further your job search. Join Groups That Relate to Your Job Interests Use Facebooks search function to find groups of people talking about your industry. If youre a marketer, for instance, try searching marketing. Once youve typed a keyword into the search bar, hit the see all results text, then ch oose the groups tab on the search results page. Some groups may be secret or closed to permit only people related to a topic to join. Ask friends and colleagues to recommend the Facebook groups they find useful for networking or learning about their industries. Get a Facebook invite from them, if needed. You can also do an online search- outside of Facebook- to see which Facebook groups people recommend in your industry. Try putting Best Facebook groups for industry/field/job title into a search engine and see what pops up. Participate in the Groups You dont have to be a moderator of the group the person who reviews every post. But aim to be an active member by regularly reading the posts. Comment on posts when you have an opinion, advice, or a tip to share. You can also post yourself by sharing articles and photos. Here are some ideas for how to participate Comment on posts asking for advice or sympathy Even something as simple as liking a post can get you noticed by the group moderator and other members.Share a relevant news story Post interesting news related to the group is an easy way to participate. Ask icebreakersYou might post something likeMy name is Sam and I went to SCAD as a textile major before becoming a production director for TV shows. Just curious how did you find your wayinto this field?Ask questionsGroup members are usually willing to answer questions and share advice. Before you ask a question though, search the groups history to see if its beenaddressed. Request help with your job searchIf youre looking for a job in a certain location or to meet people in your city, you can post with these direct asks. You may be surprised to find how generous people are sharing advice or connections. Follow the rules Make koranvers to note the groups rules before posting. Some groups, for instance, have rules against self-promotion, so youll want to make sure to avoid pushing your book, if youve written one, or any products where you make money. Typi cally, youll find that most groups haveonlyafew active members and a lot of lurkerspeoplewho read posts, and sometimeslikethe posts, but rarely comment. Be more active than this silent majority- join (and start) the conversation. AttendIn-Person Events If people post about networking events- conferences or drink gatherings in your area- consider attending. Youll already have something in common with other attendees, which can make small talk easier. The connections formed by meeting someone in person tend to be stronger than those created with online interactions. Leave Groups That Arent Active or Helpful With closed groups, you wont be able to see the quality and quantity of posts before joining. Dont hesitate to leave any Facebook group you join that isnt helpful or is cluttering up your feed with content that isnt actionable. Just think of it as unsubscribing from a marketing newsletter. Spam isnt going to further your job search itll only eat up your valuable time. Your goal is to join groups with meaningful information, where you can form connections. Form Connections fruchtwein of your friends on Facebook are probably people youve met in real life. But, as you engage with fellow group members, you may discover you have a lot in common- evenmore than the topic of the group. Inside jokes can form. Personal details may get shared. This is the process of becoming friends online. Once youve had a few interactions on comment threads- beyond just liking each others comments- it may feel reasonable to extend the relationship beyond the group, and connect as friends. You may also send direct messages to people in groups, using Facebooks messenger functionality. Be cautious, however. Unlike LinkedIn, most people do associate Facebook with friends- notprofessionalnetworking- so you do not want to abuse the messenger functionality. Make koranvers Your Profile Doesnt Have Anything Inappropriate The primary purpose of Facebookisconnecting with friends and family. Once youre in a group, however, youshouldknow that people click through to your profile page once you post. What will they see?Youdbettermake sureyourprofile doesnt have anything starkly unprofessional showing (i.e.,pictures of you drunk, scandalous outfits, hateful or unkind language, curses, etc.). These are good policies to follow if youre job searching anyway, becauserecruiters and hiring managersareknowntocheck profilesas part of their pre-interview prep work. 5 Steps to Take After a Bad Job Interview
5 Steps to Take After a Bad Job Interview5 Steps to Take After a Bad Job InterviewAlthough one of your goals as a job seeker is to try and ace your job vorstellungsgesprchs, having a schwimmbad job interview can actually be a very good thing In fact, a job interview that you bombed might be mora helpful than the one that you breezed through.Taking these five steps after abad job interview can help you learn and move forward in your job search1. Assess your interview immediately. Chances are, you probably had an idea that your interview went south sometime during the interview. So dont wait days (or even weeks) to try to figure out what exactly went wrong. Sometime soon after your interview, clear some space in your schedule (and in your head) and go over the entire job interview process. Ask yourself some honest questions Were you really prepared for the interview? When could you tell that the interview was over? Pinpointing the particulars of the job interview while its still fresh in your mind can offer some insight into what you did right, and unfortunately, what you did wrong.2. Ask for advice. After a bad interview, your confidence might be shaken. Talk to people whose opinion you rely upon (and who have your best interest at heart) to give you some sound advice. Family and friends, career mentors, and even former bosses or coworkers might be able to give you some insight into your interview and give your job interviewing skills a solid (and honest) critique.3. Maintain your professionalism. Even if all you want to do is hide your head under your pillow after a job interview gone wrong, you should still try to be as professional as possible. That means writing a thank-you note (an email will do just fine) to your interviewer, thanking him for his time. This also gives you the opportunity to correct any possible errors that you might have made during the interview, and reiterate how much you would like to be considered for the position. And you never know- e ven if you think you totally blew your interview, the hiring manager might not feel the same way4. Pat yourself on the back. Sure, your interview jitters might have caused you to mess up your interview, but that doesnt mean that youre not a good candidate for the job. (It just means that youre human, and everyone makes mistakes sometimes.) Instead of obsessing about everything that went wrong, flip the track and think about what went right. For starters, you got the job interview, so obviously the hiring manager thought that you had the qualifications to fit the position. And most likely there were some good points during the interview- it couldnt have been all bad Seeing the job interview in a more objective light can help you stay positive and give you the confidence youll need going forward in future interviews.5. Mourn- and then move on. Sometimes, theres no rebounding from a bad job interview. That can be especially painful if it was a job that you really wanted. If you know th at theres no recovering from your job interview gaffe, give yourself time to mourn the job that you thought you were going to have (and everything else that was going to go along with it), and then move on. Learn from your mistakes so you dont repeat them in your next job interview. And remember, even if it doesnt feel like it now, theres an even better job just waiting for you. Why You Should Give Job References a Heads-Up
Why You Should Give Job References a Heads-UpWhy You Should Give Job References a Heads-UpChances are, at some point during your career, youve either asked for (or been asked to give) a reference. And with good reason. References are a great way to prove your bankability to a potential babo beyond what you have written on your job application. But its not just enough to simply ask for a reference- you need to cultivate and care for your references, parteicularly if youre going to need them as part of an upcoming job interview. Below are a few reasons why you should always give job references a heads-up.Here are three reasons to give job references a heads-up1. It gives you a chance to assess the situation.Lets say you asked your former anfhrer for a reference, and because you were a great worker, he gave you a glowing one.Thing is, over time, your previous boss isnt necessarily going to remember that he gave you a recommendation- or eventhat you worked for him, depending on the size of the company. So reaching out to your former boss before a new boss contacts him to ask about your work habits is a good idea.It allows you to assess the situation with your former boss for example, seeing if he still works with the company, and more importantly, if he still has a good professional standing and would be a good person to list as a reference.2. It gives you an opportunity to spotlight your achievements. When you reached out to your former boss to let himknow of your upcoming job interview, he was super excited for you. But when it came time to tell your boss-to-be of your past accomplishments, he was a little fuzzy on the details. He didnt remember that you were the one to implement a program that wound up saving the company a lot of money and frustration.Thats why its so important to give job references a heads-up before you put them down on your job application. It not only gives you a chance to reconnect, but to also remind your reference-giver of all your past glo ries.3. It gives them time to prepare. As much as your old boss loved you, he might not love being contacted out of the blue to give a verbal reference. People like to have time to prepare their thoughts, especially if its an important issue, such as your potential new job.So out of respect for your former boss or colleague, give him a call (dont text or email) and reconnect. Then, remind him of the lovely reference that he gave you and that you are currently interviewing for X position. Let him know that a hiring manager will be contacting him within a few days to just confirm what he wrote. That way, youre being courteous to your former boss but also ensuring that hes prepared and polished when it comes time to give his verbal reference. Many hiring managers will request references from potential job candidates. Making sure you have references that are as current as possible and givingyour job references a heads-up will ensure you get an amazing reference that will hopefully get you the job.Readers, do you give your job references a heads-up that a potential employer might be calling them while youre job hunting? Open Office Floor Plan Pros and Cons
Open Office Floor Plan Pros and ConsOpen Office Floor Plan Pros and ConsOnce upon a time, cubicles and private bros were all the rage in corporate workspaces, with their sound-proof barriers and privacy partitions. Then the walls were cleared out and long, shared desks moved in, to make way for the more contemporary open schreibstube floor plan.If youre a manager, you may be making a move to open your workspaces, too. An open office floor plan would save the company money, after all, allowing you to ditch the doors so you can promote accessibility and teamwork among your employees.Taking the lead from tech startups, traditional companies have embraced open-space layouts in recent years. But elend everybodys on board with them, a new Robert Half survey shows. Respondents said open floor plans may help collaboration and isolation, but they have definite downsides when it comes to productivity, creativity, energy levels and stress.See the survey results in The Optimal Office Space Confi guration slideshow, below. Is there an ideal workspace for finance teams?Kathleen Downs, a vice president with Robert Half Finance Accounting, says theres no one-model-fits-all office floor plan for every company. The ideal workspace may be a hybrid office that allows for collaboration with communal areas but also is designed to accommodate the need for quieter, enclosed spaces, she says. Employers should consider the balance of company culture, workflows, job functions, department needs and employee preferences.Just as managers need to effectively lead and motivate multiple generations in the workforce, they should also make an effort to create an office setting thats attractive to candidates and longtime employees. In todays hiring environment, firms are willing to compete fiercely for your top performers, and recruitment and retention efforts should be top of mind, Downs said. Aside from providing the essentials, such as phones, computers and comfortable chairs, you should think ab out your work environment as a whole and whether its considered a bonus or a stumbling block. The Optimal Office Space Configuration from Robert Half Pros and cons of office configurationsOne of the ways managers can decide whats right for their office, Downs says, is to consider the pros and cons of the different office configurationsPrivate offices - enclosed space for one worker with a door.Pros Employees can make business and personal phone calls, hold meetings or have private conversations without being seen or heard by other staff members.Cons Theyre expensive and require more space to implement. Workers who close their doors can seem unapproachable.Private cubicles - enclosed area for one worker with tall walls that are not ceiling height, allowing the person inside to hear but not see colleagues.Pros They provide some privacy.Cons Outside discussions can be distracting, and employees worried abo ut disrupting others might avoid conversations, prohibiting collaboration.Semi-private cubicles - designated space with short walls that allow workers to see and hear each other.Pros Professionals can see each other, making it easier to have spontaneous conversations. This option offers an open floor plan feel, but also allows workers to feel ownership of their space.Cons Impromptu conversations can be disruptive to nearby workers trying to focus.Open floor plan - undesignated areas for workers, free of dividing walls can include a communal table with bench seating or movable furniture.Pros This option saves on overhead costsand is best for roles, departments or industries that require a high level of collaboration.Cons Its not ideal for introverted personalities or those who require a quiet space for concentration. It also lacks sound privacy for confidential discussions.Combination of open and closed workspaces - includes some private work stations such as offices, private or s emi-private cubicles, as well as areas for collaboration such as couches in a designated area.Pros It isnt as disruptive as other schrifts of configurationsand allows for employees to gather in common areas.Cons Its more expensive to implement and can take more time to design this type of space.Remember that top companies are constantly reinventing themselves, and as your company evolves, so will your office environment. Whatever workspace change you decide on for your office dwellers - open, closed or somewhere in between - should be a tactical decision, one thats accompanied with adequate advancenotice to your staff.Create a physical setting where people want to work, and both collaboration and productivity will come your way.Get more articles and resources to build and manage a winning team. How Often Are Resume Updates Needed
How Often Are Resume Updates Needed How Often Are Resume Updates Needed How Often Are Resume Updates Needed? Whether you're looking for your first job, seeking a better opportunity, or currently unemployed, your resume is a crucial tool in your job hunt. Don't just write yours and then rely on it, thoughrealize that it's a work-in-progress and merits attention throughout your search. It's vital to keep updating your resume, especially in a difficult employment market. Make sure you're always presenting yourself as impressively as possible. For students seeking an internship or first job, revise every semester, advises Lisa Dickter, associate director for Career Consultants Carnegie Mellon's Career and Professional Development Center, Pittsburgh, PA. Once you're working, update several times a year. If you wait, it's hard to remember what you did ten or eleven months ago. After each new project, update your resume while details are fresh in your mind, and it's easy to explain what you accomplished or learned, Dickter recommends. Whenever you have something to add, do it as soon as possible. The point of a resume is citing your accomplishments and giving the specifics: what you did, and how you did it. If you're not working, it's especially valuable to keep freshening your resume, update as often as you can, Dickter emphasizes. In today's job market, with lay-offs and downsizing, being unemployed for a few months is typical. If you've been job-hunting longer than three months, try to find a volunteer, part-time or temporary position within your field. Register with a temp agencyan employer may have a short-term project requiring additional staff, but would rather not hire full-time or permanent engineers [who also have to be paid benefits]. Volunteering shows both motivation and involvement in your field. Tutor a beginning mechanical engineering student, or find a local high school or non-profit organization that's encouraging interest in science and engineering. Finding an appropriate volunteer spot isn't always easy, Dickter admits, but it's an excellent addition to your resume while you're not working. Revising is a strategic job-hunting tactic. If it's been a few months since you applied to a particular employer, Updating your resume is a good reason to get in touch again, says Dickter. (However, remember that you can't contact them every other week). Ask a professional colleague to review your resume and make sure it's effective and nice-looking, she suggests. It's a good opportunity to ask for an informational interview, with someone who you know has no current openings. Just be clear that you're simply seeking advice about the industry right now, and any suggestions about how to strengthen your resume. The reviewer may suggest changing some wording, or adding more detail in one area, says Dickter. Then one day, if a friend mentions having an appropriate opening, because of that recent contact the person you asked will probably remember you, and might recommend you for that job. Employers pay attention to when you've done things, Dickter finds. She prefers placing dates at the right margin or immediately after the job you're listing, because putting them on the left side of the page draws attention to the time frame. You want the employer to focus on what you achieved or which skills you gained. For accomplishments with the same employer, you needn't list the date of each previous project; simply distinguish each one with a bullet. When you update, add any recent project at your current job. In describing your current position, say July 2011 to present. You'll need to decide whether it's more impressive to describe the position through specific projects you've handled, or by general accomplishments on the job, says Dickter. Make periodic decisions about what to add or delete. For experienced engineers, include mostly information relevant to the field. Mention things you've set up for professional or alumni associations, like networking events. This shows organizational skills and time management. I think employers do like to see that people have a life outside their engineering jobs. Some career advisers prefer including hobbies, but I think something like running a marathon is better to bring up in the interview, Dickter says. Twenty or more years after college, It's fine not to list every job, especially if you've had ten different positions. But decision-makers dislike employment gaps, so try to show continuous employmentdon't simply omit your fourth and sixth jobs. Be sure to add any new publication, conference presentation, or position at your professional association. If you've accomplished something specific that you really want a chance to talk about, like an impressive skill you've acquired, realize the interviewer won't ask unless you mention something for them to pick up on, Dickter notes. That's why updating about that new project, responsibility, or accomplishment is so important. Your resume is a marketing tool for you to show your strengths and skill, she emphasizes. Make sure that yours is always a powerful, very current, asset. Email Etiquette and the Job Search
Email Etiquette and the Job Search Email Etiquette and the Job Search Just finishing with a client who loves his new resume. Hes thrilled with my work and says hell tell everyone he knows which is a surprise to me because honestly I started out thinking he was unhappy with my service. When I first sent his resume, his response was: Thanks for the resume. Please make the following changes: He then listed his suggested changes, none of which were major, but the tone of his opening sentence made me think he was less that thrilled. Anyway, after several rounds of changes, and a couple more brusque emails, he surprised me with his glowing thank you email. Phew! But my point is this: email is a tough communication medium. You cant assume people know your intent or can read your mood. During a job search, you must be very careful to make sure that your message is communicated just as you intended. The same applies even within your current job when you write to people who dont know you personally, how do you sound? I remember starting at a new job back in the early days of email, and learning that my new staff were a little scared of me based on the way my emails sounded. Because I launched right into my message and used short direct sentences, they thought I was angry. We cleared it up and I changed my style, but I was only able to do that because my Payroll Manager had the courage to tell me how I sounded. If youre not sure how your emails sound, ask someone you trust to review the important ones before sending. It doesnt matter that I thought my client was less than thrilled, but if he used the same tone in a job search, it could cause him problems.

How to decode your paycheck and manage your money like a boss
How to decode your paycheck and manage your money like a boss How to decode your paycheck and manage your money like a boss One of the best perks of working a full-time job after you graduate from college is receiving a consistent paycheck. Regardless of whether youâre paid every other Friday or just twice a month, that income is your ticket to financial freedom - if you manage it correctly. Before you go spending all that dough, take a few minutes to understand whatâs printed on your paycheck and pay stub. Then learn what it takes to manage that money so you stay on track for all of your financial goals.Understanding Your paycheckYour paycheck has a lot of valuable information in it. Learning what it all means can help you stay on top of your finances and manage your money like a boss. Hereâs a breakdown of what could be in your paycheck, as well as what it all means.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In this example below, letâs say youâre making an annual salary of $50,000 at an aweso me job in North Carolina. This is your fourth paycheck since you started working and you have health, dental and vision insurance, plus an employer-sponsored 401(k) retirement account that you signed up for and are contributing 6 percent to from every paycheck.Setting up direct depositNow that youâre getting a paycheck every two weeks or so, make sure you get that money in your hands ASAP. If you donât have a checking account yet, nowâs the time to sign up for one. There are a ton of banks to choose from, so shop around for one that works best for you. We recommend one with no fees, no minimum balance requirements, easy access to ATMs and a good interest rate.Once you have your checking account in place, sign up for direct deposit at work. Youâll most likely receive a form for it on your first day, but if not, ask your HR or payroll department about it. Also, youâll need to fill in some information on this form, including your name, bankâs name, checking account number and bank routing number. Lastly, youâll need to include a voided check with the form (literally a blank check that has the word âVOIDâ written on it in big letters). Once youâve completed these steps, you wonât have to worry about receiving a paper check anymore. Your money will arrive in your account ASAP on payday.Pro Tip: Always have at least one and a half monthsâ worth of take-home pay in your checking account at all times so that you can cover all of your expenses and whatever else life throws your way.Scheduling automatic bill payNow that your paycheck is being directly deposited into your checking account, schedule automatic bill payments so you never miss a deadline. Lots of companies allow this option for customers, so check in with your credit card, electric, phone and any other company that you pay a bill to every month.Youâll also want to sign up for automatic transfers so you can save money every month without even thinking about it. You can do this by opening a savings account - preferably a high-interest savings account - and then scheduling the transfer of funds for every payday. If youâre not sure how much to save, try the 60-20-20 budget, where you save 20 percent of your income, spend 20 percent of your income and pay off your bills and necessities with the other 60 percent of your income.Pro Tip: Maximize your money by connecting your bills to a rewards credit card that offers cash back, points or miles. Then, schedule automatic bill payments for that credit card so you never miss that payment. Credit cards are a great way to build credit and achieve an excellent credit score. If you donât have one, we suggest you find one thatâs right for your everyday expenses.Managing your moneyThe moneyâs flowing in and youâre feeling good about your finances, but are you doing everything you can to make it count? Hereâs a quick checklist to consider when it comes to managing your new income like a boss. Budgeting: Take inventory of your finances and then create a budget around the 60-20-20 method. You can start with a simple Google Sheet. Just type in all of your expenses, compare that with your income and make sure you have enough to cover it all. Paying down debt: Your debt, whether itâs student loans or credit cards, is part of your monthly bills. Make paying it off a priority. Once youâve paid the minimum, consider paying a little more toward the principal if you can. Itâll help you save money by not paying as much interest in the long run. Building an emergency fund: Saving any amount of money is great, but you should really aim to build up an emergency fund. Once you have six to nine monthsâ worth of expenses saved, plus a little more, you can start putting more money toward other things, like the principal on your debt or an investment account. Investing: Once youâre in a good place with paying your bills and saving money, consider investing some cash. You can start with as little as $5 through companies like Acorns. Other great beginner investment accounts include Robinhood, Fundrise and Ellevest. With these tips, youâll be well on your way to serving as your own financial advisor by the time youâre 30 years old. Just stay on top of your finances now and in the future, and youâll be leading the life youâve always wanted in no time. This article originally appeared on Swirled. 6 Ways to Make 15 Minutes Count in Your Job Search
6 Ways to Make 15 Minutes Count in Your Job Search 6 Ways to Make 15 Minutes Count in Your Job Search Job searching can seem like an interminable process when youâre in the throes of it. Search for jobs, send out job applications. Repeat. Over and over again. But there are ways you can spruce up your job search by using mini deadlines to get things done. Here are six ways to make 15 minutes count in your job search: 1. Make your social media private. Letâs face it: although much of Facebook is fake, there are always going to be those errant photos posted by a friend or a ranting post that might not paint you in the best job seeker light. So first things first: set your social media channels to private (i.e., friends only), and spend a little time curating your page to make sure that there isnât anything on there that could cast an unfavorable shadow on you or your chances of getting hired. 2. Invest in a resume writer. Like anything else, writing is a skill. But even the best writers can get stumped when it comes to resume writing. If you find that you canât quite get the knack of summarizing your entire education, career, and skill set on one single page, it might be time to invest in a resume writer. These professionals can polish your accomplishments and write them in a way that is pleasing to both a potential employer- and wonât get your resume rejected by the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). 3. Clear the clutter. Can you see the surface of your desk? Maybe yes, maybe no. Thing is, a cluttered desk means a cluttered mind, so itâs in your best job searching interest to find a way to keep the clutter to a minimum. Having everything neat and tidy in your home office can also help in case you have a last-minute video interview. And reducing the amount of clutter- and keeping it that way- is a great soft skill that all remote workers should have and can help boost your job search performance. 4. Assess your job search style. You might like to job search a little bit in the morning, and then again at nighttime. Or you might be the type who wants to commit a full few hours daily to job hunting to get it done with. Whatever the case might be, itâs a good idea to assess your job search style to ascertain what is working- and what isnât. It might be that youâre a morning person and therefore produce your best work during the early daylight hours. If thatâs the case, restructure your search to optimize those hours instead of sprinkling your search throughout your day. 5. Commit to networking. Networking is an integral part of job searching, and whether you love or loathe it, youâll need to do it at some point. So look for ways to incorporate networking naturally into your job search. It might be something as simple as committing to talking to at least one new person a day about your job search, or even following a potential mentor on Twitter. Small, simple steps can help you build your networking confidence, making it a whole lot easier to do, and hopefully lead you towards a solid connection that will land you an interview. 6. Hone your remote interviewing skills. If youâre looking for a telecommuting job, thereâs a good chance that your job interview might be conducted via Skype. If youâre camera-shy, thereâs no better time to start practicing your video interviewing skills than during those 15 minutes youâve set aside each day to improve your job search! Practice looking directly at the camera, speak slowly and clearly, remembering to smile, and have a cheat sheet like your resume or other notes on your desk (but not in camera view) in case you need to reference a past job or employerâs name. Also, be sure to have a camera-ready interview suit (top and bottom, please), and make sure that your home office is clear of clutter. That way, youâll present yourself in the best possible light. Fifteen minutes might not seem like a whole lot of time, but it can greatly improve your job search. By working under a tight deadline, it will force you to focus on what needs to get done, and hopefully make you a stronger remote job candidate! Start Your Job Search

How to Start a Therapeutic Riding Program
How to Start a Therapeutic Riding Program How to Start a Therapeutic Riding Program Theres a plethora to be said about how therapeutic being in contact with horses can be. The logical next step for someone who has benefited from being around horses throughout their lives is to want to give that gift to their communities. But, whats the best way to go about it? Lets discuss that. Heres some basic advice: Starting a therapeutic riding program requires proper planning, recruitment of qualified staff and volunteers, and dedicated fundraising efforts. Now, lets delve a little deeper. Experience The first step to take before starting your own therapeutic riding program is to gain hands-on experience by volunteering with an established therapeutic riding center. There is no substitute for learning the ins and outs of a therapeutic program by participation. You may also be able to find a mentor at an established program that can help you with your programâs planning. Location It is important that a therapeutic riding center be fully accessible to physically handicapped adults and children. The facility should have handicapped accessible barns, bathrooms, and parking areas. The riding arena should be completely fenced for safety, in case a horse should bolt unexpectedly. A covered or indoor arena is ideal, as sessions will be able to go on despite any inclement weather conditions. Legal Considerations If your therapy program can qualify for non-profit status (also known as 501(c)(3) tax exempt status), donors will be allowed to write off their contributions of money, supplies, and other gifts. After filling out the proper paperwork with the Internal Revenue Service, it can take three to six months (or more) to obtain non-profit status. You should also check into the possibility of licenses being required by your city and state. You may need a business license and file additional forms to operate a therapeutic riding facility. Insurance It is important to obtain an insurance policy that covers liability and other potential needs. The coverage will protect you if someone is injured by an animal or is in any other way injured on the premises. Fundraising Donations Donations from the community are one of the primary sources of income for therapeutic riding programs. A website and email newsletter should be available to your donors to demonstrate what is being accomplished with their support. It is important to send acknowledgments for donations and to keep detailed records of all contributions. Other fundraising options may include applying for funding from grants and endowments, hosting charity benefit events (such as a dinner, fashion show, or art show), asking local businesses to become official sponsors of the program, seeking publicity from the media, and selling custom items such as tee shirts and hats featuring the groupâs name and logo. Donations of goods and services are often as important as financial contributions. Feed companies may supply discounted or free products for the horses. Local pet photographers may agree to donate photos of horses and riders for your website or brochures. Horses Equipment It is important to find suitable horses that are âbombproofâ- meaning that they are not easily startled by sudden gestures or noises. The horses will have to deal with a number of unexpected movements and sounds from the riders and assistance staff, so a steady disposition is critical. Horses should also have smooth gaits and be well trained for beginner level riders. All the usual tack (such as saddles, saddle pads, and bridles) and safety equipment (ASTM/SEI approved riding helmets) will be necessary. Mounting blocks, ramps, or automated lifts are very useful for assisting riders as they climb up into the saddle. Instructor Certification The most prominent certification group for therapeutic riding instructors is the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH), formerly known as North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). PATH instructors are certified in three levels: Registered, Advanced, and Master. There is 3,500 PATH riding instructors and 30,000 volunteers that currently serve over 42,000 students worldwide. Other therapeutic riding instructor certification programs include those from the Certified Horsemanship Association (Instructor of Riders with Disabilities), Riding for the Disabled (Instructor), Pennsylvania Council for Therapeutic Horsemanship (Instructor), British Horse Society (Riding for the Disabled Senior Instructor), and the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (Instructor). Volunteers Volunteers must be prepared to assist a diverse group of students facing physical, mental, or emotional challenges. They may serve as horse leaders, side walkers/spotters, or as the arena set-up crew (getting things ready for games and obstacle course events). Volunteers do not necessarily need to have prior experience, but knowledge of horses and horsemanship will prove particularly beneficial. Local riding stables, horse shows, and tack shops are great places to post flyers to recruit volunteers. Volunteers may assist with a variety of therapeutic activities such as grooming, saddling, an obstacle course set up, games, and balance exercises. Volunteers should be given a comprehensive training course to familiarize them with the ins and outs of working with horses and students in a therapeutic program.
